Winterfinding & Runes from the Well

Updated: Oct 13, 2021

This is the time of year when we give thanks for the harvest and begin to prepare for winter. Freyr, the god of peace and fertility is offered to, along with the alfar (the male ancestors) in an observance called Alfablot, and the land wights (land spirits). At a later date, a separate observance is held for female ancestors. Thor and his wife Sif can also be offered to, for their role in protection from storms and harm and their connection to the harvest.

More than giving thanks for the harvest, this was the time when livestock would be slaughtered or brought inside and food would be preserved so it could sustain the household. Traditionally, this festival is celebrated with feasting, dancing and bonfires. Even though much has changed in how we access our food and many people are disconnected from the cycle of food production, we are still governed by the rhythms of nature.

I honour this festival by cleaning my home and ensuring that I have enough candles and warm clothes to get me through the cold season, along with art supplies so that I can make devotional art for my altar and as offerings. I make a special meal, including homemade bread. If I haven't already, I start a new batch of mead and preserve my food. This will be the first year that I can have a proper bonfire and I'm very much looking forward to it.

Since this is a time of year when many cultures honour their ancestors, I decided to do a rune casting for insight on two areas of life which are particularly important at this time: family and home. These castings are for general wisdom for the collective and I have chosen the Place of Opposites casting by Amy Sophia Marashinsky.

Family:What do we need to bear in mind as it relates to family? (This can be blood, chosen or spiritual family)

1) What aspect needs to be focused on?

Laguz: Adapt to the flow of life and let yourself be vulnerable. Bring awareness to your intuition and instincts. Good fortune and opportunity are at hand.

2) What is hidden that is creating the current situation?

Dagaz: A cataclysmic change which brings insight and illumination. Clear vision, enlightenment and security. The protection offered by daylight.

3) What can be actively done?

Wunjo: Prosperity, friendship and joy. Good fortune, luck and success are coming. Celebrating your achievements.

4) What needs to be experienced?

Raido: A possible change in occupation or address. Often signifies an inner journey and shifts in consciousness, a new course of study. Forward motion, leadership and exploration.

Overview: Focus on being flexible when as life unfolds, staying connected to your personal power (your instincts and intuition), rather than others power over you. Unacknowledged power dynamics can be revealed and altered by being willing to speak on what you see. Remember the blessings you already have and consider changing your circumstances instead of trying to change yourself.

Home: What do we need to bear in mind as it relates to home?

1) What aspect needs to be focused on?

Sowelo: The light that sustains life. The strength of personal power to make change. The coming of good fortune, success, victory and confidence.

2) What is hidden that is creating the current situation?

Algiz: Progress; fortunate influence. A sign of protection or victory. Assistance in the face of danger. The valuing of friendship and support.

3) What can be actively done?

Jera: Respecting the natural order to receive the rewards of hard work. Practice patience and avoid judgment of others

4) What needs to be experienced? Raido: A possible change in occupation or address. Often signifies an inner journey and shifts in consciousness, a new course of study. Forward motion, leadership and exploration.

Overview: Direct your attention to the good things already in your life and how you can use your agency to call in more of them. Investigate where you feel that you need protection. Work with the natural order, including your own energy cycles and consider whether it's time to take your life in a different direction.

In the coming months, I'll continue to share more about Heathen festivals and lore. What would you like to know?
